need software to view what is installed on AD computers

I'm looking for software, preferably free, that scan scan our AD and tell me exactly what software is installed on each computer.

You could install Network management software like SpiceWorks (free) or other third party products that cost money.  Really depends on what kind of software list you want and how you want to do things.

We currently use spiceworks but I don't want to put all of our computers in there we just use it for the servers
I've use Fast Software Audit (Free but unsupported), which works pretty well.
Spiceworks is good if you plan on keeping it in place as an ongoing solution. But for one-off scans, the Microsoft Assessment and Planning is actually pretty tough to beat.
I've used the feature in Spiceworks to accomplish this.  All you have to do is ensure that network scan runs when no other network scans are running and check the scan interval times to avoid creating bottlenecks on the network.
