I am sending emails to my new email / server nothing is returned but nothing is received.

I recently sent up a new email on my server , using a win client thundbird i sent a test massage to the new email.
no errors returned, but i have no idea where on the server the message was received, or if it is even working. I would not know where to start looking to resolve the issue .. the following is some infor

Linux Debian 5
i created a new user with password -
i created a dir for the user /home/newusername/mail where mail is dir and nothing has been received so far
after 2 tests.

Postfix is the tranport on the server. ( i can proved the main.cf file if asked ) there is some sensitive private server settings here.

the mx record is mail. xxxxx.com  i can get more info if needed.

the resolv.conf is
domain cable.myisp.com
search cable.myisp.com
nameserver 192.168.1.1 (router ip)

Are you sure you're dealing with Debian version 5?  Version 8.7 is current.  There have been so many changes in the internet, in Debian itself, and so many security patches since Debian V5 that I would not recommend running any kind of internet-facing software on a V5 system.

my server has a static IP address and it currently has SMTP via a relay allowed from the ISP.
also the server has a default email that i can send and rec emails.,   that seems to be working well.
the problem is setting up a new user, i will look at these resources and get back.
Thank you
oK... user access is handled by different programs than mail transport...
What did you set up for user access? IE.. POP3 or IMAP access?
Does it's log show any errors?
Look at the /var/log/maillog to see what happened with the message, if it was not locally delivered but rather sent out, this means you did not define the domain as local.

Always consult logs they help identify the issues.

What is the basis of your setup? Do you use local users as the mailbox ..
MySQL PostgreSQL or similar db based backend for mailbox/alias data?

in /ect/inetd.conf there is a pop-3 demon loaded at boot and imap2 and imaps demon also loaded at boot.
search of the log for the default email name and the new name brings up null / nothing
again from Thunderbird i did test mail sendings to the defaul mail and new user name ... no returns, no error, no log....

ARNOLd
there is /var/mail/www-data file which seems to accumulate mails sent to the default email user by aliases names
another words, if i send a test em directly to the default email, no errors, no returns, but it does not end up in the mail files.
if i send an email to an aliases of the default it ends up in the www-data mail file.
the default email has a user name directory ie /home/username/mail   nothing gets delivered there.
i think i am using local users,. If you believe seeing the config files would help solve the problem i can get them.
such as postfix's cf's, the aliases file, resolv.conf ect .... they have some sensitive info in them i could email them to you for safety.
or i could provided them here ... later blanking out the info.
I am not using SQL for emailing as far as i know ,,, but wordpress might be doing that....
I was asking if you knew WHICH message transfer agent you were using.
That will help to track down what settings are needed or might be wrong...

I picked up that you are using postfix for your MTA, but that is only part of the equation.
I also agree that you should be using a newer version of Debian.
Www-data suggests you have web site and email generated there.
Looking at the maillog will answer most of your questions dealing with what happens to a message that is sent or received.

I am terrified of an upgrade as that my take me back to the stone age.
I have not only postfix settings but ProFTP config.  an inetd config. appache sites and SSL.
SSH which stopped working for some reason.
I am afriad that an upgrade may wipe all that work out. i don't want to take a change.

Arnold,
I will to more testings and look an the logs. thx
