What process are you using that isn't working, and are there any errors along the way?

None of the suggested procedures work.  I can go to the default apps page and click on the one at the bottom where it is supposed to show microsoft edge as the default, but it is only showing a plus sign instead.  If I click on it then I get the option to choose the web browser that I want,  but no matter which one I choose the plus sign remains and it seems that edge still remains the default browser because when I open up edge it doesn't ask me to change it to the default.  I'm getting suspicious a virus of some sort is causing this.

On your question, LVL53,  I first opened up chrome and clicked on "make default" and then the default app page in windows opened up and there I attempted to select chrome, but all that there is, is the plus sign.  in fact, it doesn't matter which one i choose as the default, the plus sign still remains.

yes I did try that also and that didn't work.  I am now running a scan with spyhunter and it has already found a bunch of viruses.
When that's done I am going to see how that acts.

The issue is fixed.  Nothing seemed to help until I created a new account and deleted the old one.  Now it is working perfectly.  The computer was full of viruses and malware and that is probably what messed it up in the first place.  It was all a learning experience and I thank all of you for your help.
I'm glad I could help. Thanks
