asked on
how can I get an entire game cd on the hard drive without it being required for game playback?
Hello and Good Evening Everyone,
I have 2 games on 2 different cds installed onto my laptop. Whenever I try to launch either one of these games, the actual game cd is required despite of the fact that they were installed. With this in mind, I am wondering if there is a way I can get these games onto the hard drive without the cds being required for playback.
Just in case this information is needed, the operating system is Windows 10.
Thank you
George

I no longer use anything that requires a CD (DVD), but if you need this, you can get USB CD (DVD) drives that work fine in Windows 10. I have one of these.

Hello and Good Morning Everyone,
Thank you very much for your follow up suggestions. I am excited to give them a try. The two games are The Price Is Right and The Family Feud 2010 versions. It sounds like the suggestion to covert each game as an ISO and mount the game to a virtual drive will do the trick. I will give the follow up suggestions a try and report back.
Thanks again :-)

Hi
I just remembered one thing which may or may not be an important consideration. The two games which require DVDs for playback are already installed. Should I uninstall them first and then use the follow up suggestions given within this post?

Hi
I do have CDBurnerXP on this laptop. I have never used it to take the contents of a DVD and create an ISO of its contents onto the hard drive. However, I would like to try this utility out if someone could provide the steps for doing this.
Thank you

Windows Explorer can burn a DVD (Share, Burn to disk) . I use Nero as well.
"... Windows Explorer can burn a DVD (Share, Burn to disk) . I use Nero as well. " ==> What he needs is NOT to burn a DVD. He needs to create an ISO file from an existing DVD.
Missed that. Sorry.

Hello and Good Evening Everyone,
Thank you so very much for your enlightening and thought provoking feedback. I can not really begin to say how much I appreciate such care and detail given to this question. After careful consideration of this entire situation, I decided to go ahead and continue dealing with the minor annoyance of inserting the installation DVD playing The Price Is Right and Family Feud. Just for good measure though, I went ahead and used CDBurnerXP and made a backup copy of both, The Price Is Right and Family Feud without any technical issues.
Thanks again everybody for your in depth feedback.

George => Do the backup copies you made of the discs work when playing the games? If so, then an ISO of them will likely work just fine when "mounted" in a virtual drive within Windows 10. If not, then they're not really "backups", as you can't play the game with them.

Hello and Good Morning Gary,
Yes, the backup copies work just fine when playing the games. Seeing that it is such a minor annoyance, I decided to continue using them when launching the games.
Thank you

Thanks George, that's useful to know. My guess is the games have been reissued by the publishers without any form of copy protection other than that annoying check for the presence of the disk. At least you can now store the originals away somewhere safe knowing that you can always create a new copy from them if required. It also suggests that the plan for mounting an .iso of the CD in a virtual drive would also work (but you'd need to reinstall the game from the mounted image). Sounds as though you have something that works for you now anyway.
