Run the Office 2013 installer in Repair Mode to reassign office file association.
> My word files no longer have the standard word icon beside them.

simply right-click a Word file and check the option Open With... on the pop-up menu, please tell us what's the default program with Word Document, as shown in my screenshot below.

control panel > program and features > select office 2013 > then select change ( right side of uninstall button ) and then select Repair.

Tried the repair option, and the quick repair failed.  Tried the advanced repair option, and it could not re install office.  Tried the on line help / repair tool and it says it was successful, but office is still on the computer, and cannot re-install - error is pre beta installation is preventing it from installing.

The attachment is what open with looked like before I tried the repair.

Probably have a bit of an OS issue, so may need to restore the OS

That was the repair tool that I used.  It says Office is completely removed, but it is still visible in programs in the control panel.  When I try uninstall it from there, I get a pop up directing me back to the same repair tool.
is there any Restore point or Image Backup on your computer ?
you can Restore Windows to an earlier state when it was okay,
this is more easier than installing new Windows and all  programs and Updates again.

The restore fails, which leads me to believe that now would be a good time to bite the bullet and salvage my data and restore the OS, then install the software again
