To get access to share folder on Windows 7 computers you need to use Windows domain user with privileges, or you need to go to Share properties and Add user from other computer/domain to have option to see share and then go to security properties on this folder and add appropriate rights for Read and List Folders and Read Permissions

This a windows server 2012 and I am domain admin looking for a nas
Hi

Please provide more info
1.x is OS....
1.xx is OS....
You indicated server 2003, is this the client trying to open the share?

On the 1.xx is file and printer sharing enabled?

Cheers

1.x is server 2k12 1.xx is Datto nas running zfs I believe

If this helps .. there is another 2k12 server which can be accessed .. but there is also a 2k8 which CANNOT
Is there a share on that 2008 machine viewable to everyone?
Is file and printer sharing enabled?
Avatar of Andre P

ASKER

Yes and Yes on the 2k8 and 2k12

as I said 1.x server(2012)  seems to be picky in what it finds

More information
From windows 7 to nas 1.xx i can access
Sounds like a SMB mess-up, what versions are returned on the different servers when you issue this powershell command?
Get-SmbConnection

PS is the NAS SMB3 compatible?

There a lot of misunderstanding with your explanation.
I understand that you have NAS and you want to have access to share on this NAS.
You can connect from Windows 7 but not from Windows 2012 Server yes ?

What about if you disable Firewall on W2K12 for test only ?

Tom .
I have a backup device datto   on my network 1.xx
I have 2 servers both 2012 (VMs same host ) on my network same segment etc.
server a can see Datto as a share and backup to it server B 1.x cannot .
Other desktops can see the datto so the issue is not the datto
the server 1.x cannot see another server on the network either 2008 ..
1.x to 1.xx error 80004005
win 7 to 1.xx  works
other 2012 server to 1.xx works
OK, so you have SAN DATTO Server A and Server B
Both servers are VM with OS W2012

You can PING DATTO from Server A but You can't from Server B
Server B can't see any other servers on your network

OK so confirm that:

1. Double check IP address on server B and compare it to Server A - specially Gateway and Network Mask, make sure there is same subnet
2. Double check virtual switch configuration, make sure Server B is connected to same VS like Server A
3. Double check if server B can ping anything in your network, for example gateway
4. Double check if network adapter on server B is active
5 Try Add additional Network Adapter to Server B and configure it exactly like Server A (change only last number in IP) and test PING.

Tom  Server B can Datto . Server B can ping everything  .
What it cannot do is NETBIOS connect . ping <datto address> works   In explorer  \\<dattoAddress> \ does not
I'm sorry but this are your words

server a can see Datto as a share and backup to it server B 1.x cannot

Also in your topic name
Able to access \\192.168.1.x  but not \\192.168.1.xx from windows 2012 server
there is nothing about NETBIOS, it's about IP's.

If NETBIOS doesn't work, then problem is in your DNS settings on Server B
Make sure your Server B is listed in your DNS A list.
If not, it's mean was not appropriate registered.

You can manually create record A or just remove server from domain and re-join it again, but make sure all IP settings on your server B network adapter IPv4 settings are correct and make sure you know local admin password (not domain admin password) before you'll remove server from domain.

Tom..
Let me try again ..
From Server A
If you open explorer .. and put in \\<IPADDRESS OF TARGET COMPUTER>\c$ you should see the share on the c drive of the computer corresponding to that address .  If I do that with the computers and servers I mentioned .. this works .
From Server A
if you open explorer and put in \\< IPADDRESS OF TARGET DATTO>\ I should see the shares on the datto This WORKS .

From Server B
If you open explorer .. and put in \\<IPADDRESS OF TARGET COMPUTER>\c$ you should see the share on the c drive of the computer corresponding to that address .  If I do that with the computers and servers I mentioned .. this works . ( EXCEPT FOR SBS2008 SERVER as TARGET )
From Server B
if you open explorer and put in \\< IPADDRESS OF TARGET DATTO>\ I should see the shares on the datto  This DOES NOT WORK

I get the error
80004005
Can you do IPCONFIG /ALL on server B and post result ?

For me it looks like you server B is using only IPv6, that's why can communicate with new servers and W7 workstation and has problem with W2008 and DATTO

Let me try again
iptext.txt
For test only. Can you go to your network properties and uncheck IPv6, then do IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS and check if you can ping other servers by netbios name ?
Avatar of Andre P

ASKER

Did it and same . I can ping the items but cannot access them for looking at shares
80004005 error
Try install additional Network Adapter on VM, disable this one and test new one
Avatar of Andre P

ASKER

did that no difference
then
unchecked Microsoft client and rechecked
then

checked registry for order of lookup

all that to no avail
note
only clue is that the only devices that cannot be accessed by thjs server con the network is
this datto  device and an SBS 2008 server

very strange because they can both be successfully pinged .
Are you sure that you're using Domain Admin on server B to access SMS2008 and Domain Admins are member of Administrator Groups on SBS ?
Avatar of Andre P

ASKER

yes because SBS is the PDC for this domain for now. we will be migrating and transferring FSBO riles soon

OK, make sure Network Discover is ON on server B
If you open Windows Explorer and click on Network on left side,,, do you see list of your all servers and workstations on right ?

I see all except the SBS server . I even see printers and someones media device..on network ..possibly a phone .
Can you access share on both 2012 servers from SBS2008 using domain admin account ?

and, what's happen if you try from W2012 to SBS2008 like this  \\SBS2008\C$

I am beginning to focus on something that could be related to this :
http://woshub.com/smb-1-0-support-in-windows-server-2012-r2/

But I dont know how to verify that this is in fact related

I cannot \\SBS2008\C$

I can access \\2012\shares from sbs
You've said that you have problem with PING SBS2008 from one Server 2012.
Can you try add record to HOST file on this W2012 server pointing to SBS2008 ?

Let say your server name is SBS2008 with IP 192.168.1.20
create record in HOST file on W2012

SBS2008       192.168.1.20

Check if ping starts and if you have access to share from W2012

to have access to host file you need to open Notepad as administrator
Avatar of Andre P

ASKER

Tom .. There is NO problem with pinging anywhere .. I can ping .. I can even rdp  i cannot access shares .
Avatar of Andre P

ASKER

My thinking is that this has something to do with the SMB protocol running on SBS 2008 not being compatible with the version running on THIS server but I dont see a difference  I have gone so far as to check and compare the registry LAN manager server and workstation entries
