Forcing check-in on SharePoint 2010

I'm trying to clean up our internal sharePoint site.  There are several documents 'checked-out'
by users that are no longer in the company.  So I get an error to say I can delete a file as it's checked out.

When I go into the folder that has the checked out documents I see that the documents don't exist!
So basically the folder is empty, I go to delete the folder and it says I can't as there is a document in there that's
checked out!

How can I just overwrite this and delete document.
I'm a site admin.

You can use the Structure and Content page found from site actions.
It gives you a good overview of the site collection.

Hope that helps...

Although a workflow would work, it is not a good approach for multiple items as the original poster described. Not to mention it is major overkill as a solution. An accurate solution as described by Edward may be a better solution for you.
