Windows 10 Black Squares on Desktop Icons

My desktop icons display black squares. Have tried removing Thumbnail cache in Disk Cleanup. Did not work.

you need the latest Graphic card driver.
or go to device manager to uninstall, then select scan for hardware change  and restart.

Well it seems there a lot of reasons why this might happened and accordingly solutions
  • Video Card Driver...update it
  • Some corruption in icon cache...
Using elevated command prompt
cd /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer 
attrib –h 
thumbcache_*.db 
del thumbcache_*.db 
start explorer

  • Some bad reg settings
This tool Vista Overlay Shortcut Manager  seems to has done the trick for some..just select different shortcut arrow each time and test

The problem is related to Graphic Driver or corruption in icon cache.
