Windows 10 Anniversary Upgrade will not install

I upgraded from W8 to W10 succesfully when it was first available and have been running it perfectly well ever since. But whenever I try to run the Anniversary Upgrade 1607 installation I get the message "Windows 10 will not run on this PC" with the CPU highlighted. I am also getting told that there is already an update in progress (probably because of my many failed attempts at 1607). I have tried all sorts of work arounds and suggestions from others on the Internet, but nothing seems to match this error.
My  Processor is Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00Hz  801MHz
My Motherboard is Maximus VII Ranger
I have 8gb of RAM  and 205gb free space on my system drive.
Can you help please?  I hope there is a way round this without having to do a clean install of Windows 10.
Thank you,
 John

Thanks for coming back so quickly.
My PC is custom built and I installed W8 fresh onto a clean Hard Drive. I'm aware that the Anniversay update is out of date (!) by now - that's why I've been anxious to catch up.
I have windows 10 iso on a USB stick. could I use that to run the windows repair - or is it wiser to run/download the latest media creation link?
I have a lot of non W10 applications and set ups so even running repair will take some preparation and backing up. I'll work on it over the weekend and let you know how I get on.

Best to download and install the newest version.
will do.
Hi there.

Successfully reinstalled W10 (keeping files) and successfully updated to the latest Version. So thanks. Problem solved.

On the downside I now have 4 pages of "Applications removed" to reinstall!

On the plus side, it's a chance to weed out some of the stuff I don't need any more! So it's Spring Cleaning time.

Thanks, John
Good to know. Can you please close the question?
Thank you for following up. Much appreciated
