Modify Permissions in Windows Folders.
Modify Permissions in Windows Folders.
I would like to know if I give a user Modify permissions on Folder1, will the user be able to delete Folder1 or they will be able to delete just what is under folder1
Thanks

It depends on what the permission applies to. Unless you use the Advanced button to add a more granular level of permission, though, it will grant the user permission to delete the folder entirely. To prevent that, click the Advanced button on the permissions tab, add the permission, and set it to apply only to objects in the folder.
If you do under the Folder1 the user only can modify under the Folder1

When you Click Advanced then click Change Permissions , I noticed there is " Delete" checkbox there.. If I uncheck it would that prevent user from deleting folder1 ??

Another confusing thing I have seen in the Advanced window when you click change permissions , it will create another enter in the ACL for the same user or group.
if a user has inherited permissions for instance "Read", then you give him Specific permissions higher than "Read", then which one wins , the inherited or the specific ?

Thanks for the screenshot..I believe this is simpler:
just uncheck "Delete" it will prevent user from deleting folder1
just uncheck "Delete" it will prevent user from deleting folder1
jskfan- That depends on what it's applied to. If they're inheriting folder only, and you add subfolders and files, those are 2 different permissions sets.
If you're having issues, just uncheck "Include inheritable permissions", then hit "add". Remove/modify as needed.

jskfan- But you need to make sure that permission set is for "folder only", otherwise they won't be able to delete any of their files or subfolders from within it. Unless you're doing "Folder, subfolders, and files" then you just need to make sure "Delete subfolders and files" is checked, but "Delete" is not.

Yes I want them to be able to delete any folder and subfolders and files under Folder1, but not Folder1 itself
jskfan: Then the best option is to assign permissions affecting "Folder, subfolders, and files", then giving all permissions except for "Delete" (leave Delete subfolders and files checked).

Thanks..
I believe Read/Write is the Best..
User will be bale to delete or edit only the Folders and files he has created ...but not folders and files other users have created

Thank Sean
Do not you think Read/Write is the safest ??
Users can create folders and files under Folder1, and they will be able to delete only the folders and files they have created , but not the folders and files other users have created
