Upgrading Windows 7

We have a couple of PCs that came with Windows 7 x64 but I had to reinstall the OS to 32-bit for a certain software. We no longer use that software and now a different software that we're going to in a few months requires 64-bit. Can I just do an upgrade on those to 64-bit without losing the data or will it basically wipe the drive?
