Connection reset by peer

I use a POP mail checking and notification application called PopTrayU v 5.2.5 on my desktop and notebook.  It works fine on the desktop, running 32-bit Windows 7 Professional.  But there is an annoyance on the notebook, which runs 64-bit Windows 7 Professional.  Afer some hours or days of good functioning, it stops checking my POP Mail accounts, and there is an error "Connection reset by peer."  I need to exit and restart the application to make it work again.  I've tried a later version of PopTrayU, v. 5.2.6, with the same behavior.  I don't understand what the error signifies, or how it might be fixed.

Seems that the application does not close the connection, and does not allow to recreate it on failure.
The connection is closed by the server side, probably because of a connection or authentication lifetime expiration.

Try to find corresponding settings in the application, to allow for more frequent login or connecting.

A connection reset by peer message means that the site you are connected to has reset the connection. This is usually caused by a high amount of traffic on the site, but may be caused by a server error as well.

Thank you for your comments.  I am not very knowledgeable on this subject, so it's unclear to me how to implement your suggestions.  The application is configured to check for new mail every 2 minutes.  The connection timeout is set to 120 sec.
Set the connection timeout to more than 120 sec or never.

Thank you.  Here is a screen shot of the timeout configuration window.  I don't see an option to set the timeout for "never".  Would zero accomplish that, or should I just make the timeout much longer?

Set it to 240 and retest.

Thank you.  I'll post again after retesting, which may take a day or so...
You are very welcome.

The "Connection Reset by Peer" error appeared after a few hours, with the timeout set to 240 sec.

Thank you.
You are very welcome, Thanks
In which way is Ramin's comment better than mine?

Qlemo:  I appreciate your participation in this question, but I did not award points for it, and you have asked me why not.   I did not know how to find application settings which would allow more frequent login or connecting, as you suggested in your comment. I posted a response ID: 42046260, in which I thanked both Experts.  I admitted that I am not knowledgeable on this subject, and didn't know how to implement the advice which either Expert had offered.  You did not respond with any follow up instructions, but the other Expert did.  While the problem hasn't been resolved, I was at least able to test the other Expert's suggestion, but I could not test yours because you did not explain it.
I understand your motives, but it is not the way EE works.  You only accept comments leading to a solution. Ramin was just wild-guessing, as I did. I have been waiting for the timeout setting to make a diffence, but expected the result you got - no effect. You then prematurely closed the question.

As I have said, the server closes the connection, so you probably can only apply workarounds.
Did you check the settings described in http://poptrayu.sourceforge.net/help/accounts.htm and http://poptrayu.sourceforge.net/help/options.htm (in particular "Check Every..." resp. "Interval (Check for mail every...minutes)", "Don't Check...")? It might help to check more (keeping the connection active) or less often (not making the server think you are trying to SPAM or attack).
Are you using SSL (requires installation of OpenSSL, so probably not)? Using that might help in keeping the connection open, and also establishes a secure connection noone can intercept and read content - and that again increase reliability and creditability on the server side.

Getting the reason why this happens requires a sophisticated debugging setup. We are not able to go that far here on EE.

Thank you for your input.  I have experimented with the checking interval and the "Don't check" interval, and I haven't found a setting yet which stops the issue.  The same application is running on a 32-bit Windows desktop, and the "connection reset by peer" has never appeared on the desktop.  I have used identical settings on the desktop and notebook, without resolving the issue.  That makes me suspect there may be an issue with the application on a 64-bit platform, as the other Expert suggested.

I'm sorry that you feel that the point award was done incorrectly for this question.  However, years ago, I only awarded points for comments which resolved the issue, and Experts criticized me for withholding points when they had contributed something meaningful.   I have also been criticized for leaving a question open indefinitely, when no comment had resolved the problem.  My sense is that it's just difficult to satisfy everyone, no matter what.

If you want to request attention from a moderator, and ask the moderator to specify the appropriate basis for awarding points, I'm open to that.
Closing was still prematurely. But since the only difference we see from your description is 32bit vs. 64bit, and the best explanation is a potential bug in the 64bit binary, I see where you are coming from, and awarding properly is difficult. I probably wouldn't have questioned your decision if you had posted a reason for it ;-).
Let's leave it at that.

Should you ever get a resolution, it would be appreciated if you e.g. post a message to me or request attention, so the new info can be posted here by me (being a Topic Advisor) or a Moderator. The question will get locked for new comments in a few days after closure, so you will not be able to do for yourself.

Happy to do that.
