Troubleshoot network

I have a slingbox connected on a different location. (B)

Every time I connect to it, after 30-40 minutes I get disconnected , and then I straight way connect to it.

I don't know where lays the issue.

Because I immediately reconnect , it doesn't make sense that on B location the internet nor the slingbox disconnects cause it would take them at least a minute or two to reconnect. I have pretty steady connection so it can't be my end.

Slingbox recently changed their  way of connection , through web so I am leaning towards that's the issue.

And suggestions?

Since you're saying that both connections are stable and fast... Have you tried checking for latency on either connection?

Author

Commented:
The thing is that I timed it. and it happens every 30 minutes so there's a cycle.

it's not random. if it was a latency issue or network , it would be random , right?

That's quite odd. I'd have to ask two things:
1) Is the slingbox connected via a cable or wireless
2) What type of devices are you using to access your slingbox? And what antivirus is on it?

Author

It's cabled, and everything worked fine for years. recently slingbox changed their policy and don't allow you to use their program anymore only the web based interface. so that worked for a while and now it has issues.

I'm using a computer windows 7 / windows 10 to access it. both computers experience the same symptoms. on one computer I have AV on the other I don't.

Are you using internet explorer on both computers, or a different browser? And which version of Slingplayer? Could even come down to some security related settings.

Author

Commented:
Using both.

Everything worked fine, just suddenly it started to happen.

I can do it. but I don't think it's the issue.

I'm using the web interface.

You say one location works and one does not.  Where are he two locations?  ie:  Internet via cable provider A, Internet via ADSL provider B?   If two different providers, problem could lie there.

Two locations works.

and when the connection drops when I click re-connect it connect immediately. which brings be to believe it's not the internet connection, otherwise it would take a minute or two

This issue sounds more like a faulty piece of hardware somewhere in the system. You might want to test equipment for potential shorts. I've had switches shorting out inside of a network that would cause some very strange issues, but only when the short was occurring. As simple as a connection dropping, but as extreme as causing printers/PCs to lock down and stop responding.

If a switch disconnects , how long will it take it to come back up ?

Are you having switch issues? But generally things would be up within a few minutes. Maybe 2 - 3 minutes (generalizing of course).

Author

Commented:
No I'm not having that. I'm rolling out the possibility it's a switch, cause I can connect right back in.

All leads point at the slingbox web interface. I would say. cause it's a piece of hardware it will disconnect every random time.

So you don't think it's the program / web interface of the slingbox?

I'm not saying that it isn't, but might as well check the things that you do have control over. Is it possible to lower the resolution that you're streaming at?

Author

Commented:
I'm going to connect to the slingbox from a device closer to the slingbox. and check if it disconnects after 30 min. So I can isolate where the issue resides.
