Try this first... If this does not work try my other suggestion below that.

On the File tab, click Options.
Select Advanced in the Outlook Options dialog box.
In the Reminders section, select Show reminders.
    Click OK.

Did you remove the old version of office prior to installing the latest version? If not uninstall and reinstall office clean. Also you mentioned you upgraded from Office 2010 to Office 2016 64 bit, I assume the OS on the PC is the 64 bit version, correct?

I have already checked that the reminders are enabled, and l have checked that via the registry as well. Sorry the install was a clean install and not an upgrade of Office

If the other fixes above don't work try creating a new outlook profile.
@ edward I have recreated the outlook profile, ran outlook/cleanreminders , outlook/resetfolders but nothing seems to work.
@ Dj 3094 l have tried the fix but it comes up with an error that says that there are no products affected by this package installed on this system, and it is a fix for office 2010 so it won't work for 2016
I have noticed another thing, when l login to the user's pc with my normal user account the reminders work. Which means the user's  profile is corrupted outlook or the user's computer profile. However when l recreated the user's outlook profile the reminders didn't work, another thing is that the user's mailbox is large however Enterprise vault is enabled. I am in two minds as whether to create a new computer profile for the user or create a new outlook profile and wait until all the mail is downloaded and then check if reminders work, the mail box is cached by the way.
