I am installing server 2012 on a bare metal server, and also on a VM. &nbsp;I plan to use DFS naming and replication for failover.<br />
<br />
I understand I can use the same 2012 license on both, but can and should I install the 25 CALs on both? &nbsp;The backup server will not be used for filesharing unless there is a failover.<br />

Related question- are CALs linked to a specific server license or are they generic among Server 2012 r2 installs and could be used elsewhere instead?<br />
