MyWay Virus

A friend who is unfamiliar with today's computers & browsers keeps getting infected with the MyWay virus. Maybe it's not a virus, it is certainly an annoyance. It seems to glom onto FireFox and make itself the default page when the browser is opened. Maybe Chrome too, not sure of that.

I have twice gotten rid of it for him; different ways each time. Today with some variation of AdAware, previously I figured out how to do it in Firefox. Computer is Windows 10.

I had him purchase a virus protection program I have used for years called AVG. I have NEVER had any issues since I have had AVG; I have Win 10 also.

Is there a permanent solution that can be applied to prevent MyWay from coming back?

Thanks

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Maybe malwarebytes can help you, it has realtime malware and anti exploit solution.
Try free for 14 days and when proven ok buy a license for around $40 a year.

Also, download, install and run Process Explorer from Microsoft.

Check on the left side under the Main Explorer tree for strange (alphanumeric) processes. Kill these, close out but do not restart.

Run Malwarebyes as noted above and clean up malware. Then restart and test.

EDUCATE THEM

Not joking, really.
What i do with my friends is i remove the iexplore and chrome shortcuts, leave them with only firefox, install an adblocker as most of the crapware comes from those shiny ads when user clicks them believing they will get a free iphone lol, do not let them use the administrator account, ask them to use limited account for regular use and only admin user for installing/configuring/fixing stuff.

Tell them to CHECK AND MAKE SURE they always use the advanced or custom installation options of installers and make sure they untick the " special offers/special features/bundled crapware" .
MYWAY is mostly bndled with something else that your friend downloaded and installed, since he is installing it with admin rights then antivirus just lets it continue.

if you are having problem with some of those pesky malware many antivirus/antimalware software removes the treath but DOESNT FIX shortcuts, and many of them currently are editing the browsers shortcuts and sending their homepage as a parameter to open as soon as you open your browser (and reinstalling themselves in the process). if you google for shortcut cleaner malware.

These days I find that Malwarebytes fairly well takes care of the whole thing.
But, if not, then the next place to look is in shortcuts and homepages of browsers.
I see very little recidivism if Malwarebytes is paid for and kept updating and running.

It's been quite a while since I've seen seriously "problem users" but that certainly had been the case in the past.
Today it's those who call that number from "Windows" that flashes on the screen or engages in that "Windows" unsolicited phone call.
But that's a lot more social engineering than a technical challenge.
Teach Them is a good idea....

I have emailed my friend & suggested the Malware Bytes approach.

Of course education is good; why we have made the internet so complicated & difficult to use for the average person is beyond me. I can't even find the method I used to remove MyWay two weeks ago; it is so difficult to find FREE ways to do this & I have been developing on & using the web for over 20 years.

Mostly this sort of junk installs with some other app. User downloads a game, clicks "I agree" on the EULA when presented, and grants the game permission to install whatever they want.

Install "Should I Remove It"
http://www.shouldiremoveit.com/

It will take care of these unwanted software that technically is not a virus, it is usually bundled software

I might have mentioned:
I ALWAYS allow Malwarebytes to remove EVERYTHING that it finds.  I've never backed off from this rule.
The point is that the user need not make any decisions - even though one may.
Thus: not so complicated.

P.S.  If you intentionally have some heavier-duty password crackers, etc. on the computer then they may be removed by doing this. OR, you have to watch removal programs so you can keep them.

If you get enough of doing manual file removals that are somewhat more difficult method, try the easier way:
http://guides.uufix.com/how-to-remove-search-myway-com-from-your-browser-completely/

The removal tool may be more expensive then Malwarebytes but I think it's worth trying.
