2 fax modems - One phone line ( Temporarily ) possible ? How ?
I am migrating fax servers for a client (SBS 2008 --> Win r12 on a VM using USB over ethernet ) who relies heavily on faxes ( still) . What I would like to do is run them both in parallel for a week so i can work out the kinks .. They only have one line for this .
How would I do this ?

Lee is correct. You could pay the phone company for a second phone number on the same line, and add Distinctive Ring service to both numbers. Then -- assuming that your faxmodems can recognize Distinctive Ring -- you can go ahead and investigate what you will.
(Expect to pay a couple hundred dollars for adding the second number, second number of the same line, and Distinctive Ring on both.)

Perhaps I have the wrong impression. A "fax server" to me means one that broadcasts faxes OUTGOING - usually from a local address book on the server and some selection process for each broadcast. Is this the case?
One can imagine that sending two faxes per broadcast would be viewed as SPAMming and not wanted behavior - even during a test.
One approach would be to broadcast half the addresses (telephone numbers) on each machine for each broadcast .. something like that.
Then one could time-domain multiplex the phone line. i.e. share it over time.
It's not the number of faxes that's important is it?
A few faxes should prove the system shouldn't it?
Why a week??

Fred , I need to prove relliability of the ethernet over USB usage ..
If this was plugged directly into the server I would not be so nervous about it

OH! Well, that's another matter entirely for me. I've never used one of those devices. Didn't even know about them! Very interesting.
So maybe a simple diagram of the 2 systems and the connections you have in mind?
Proving reliability seems disconnected enough from FAXing that there may be other recommendations.
