OLD email files

I have an employee who quit. I cancelled his O365 account. he came back and when i put reactivated his name he cant get any of his old mail

about one week. There is another issue. When i first turned him back on i set him on essentials and this morning upgraded him to premium. I am not an it expert and i know i made a mistake but need help finding it.
Yeah, I'd call MS and have them untangle the issue.  I'm not sure there is anything you can do at this point on your own.
Calling MS at this point is the only viable solution.
