Does exchange server encrypt my email?

Hi Expert,

we are using MS exchange 2013 .Does exchange 2013 encrypt the email when we sends the email to outside by default. If yes could you please tell me what kind of encrypt is used (is it TLS?)

No. SMTP is unencrypted by default.
That's only true to a certain degree. Yes, by default there is no encryption, but all mail agents support TLS encryption. Many consider it optional for compatibility reasons; that is an issue, as both receiver and sender need to agree on using TLS, most will fall back to unencrypted transfer if not explicitly inhibited.

So it is a configuration matter. TLS should be mandatory on your side.
@Qlemo, the question asks if mail is encrypted when sent to outside by default.  It isn't, and for obvious reasons.

What you should do is a different matter :-)
I have to admit I do not know what Exchange uses for SMTP send by default - but I assume it at least tries to use TLS first.

Sorry? That comment #a42054212 is not correct for Exchange. By default, Exchange uses encryption, see #a42054506 (which again answers your follow-up request).
Agreed
