Does the above HP printer has an SD or USB port that I could scan & save directly to?

Or how does it save scan outputs?  To a laptop wirelessly or via a USB cable or ?

If scan images are saved via wireless, any chance I could save direct to a wireless
HDD like Toshiba Canvio AeroCast  or
Seagate Wireless Mobile Portable Hard Drive Storage 500GB STDC500101 ??

You can scan to a computer both over wireless and via USB. No flash drive or network device options. Sorry to disappoint you.

> via USB
So I can stick a thumb drive into the 4650 & scan directly into the thumb drv?

If the 4650 doesn't allow a thumb drv or SD to be stick into it, do suggest a
lowest-cost HP Officejet that allows this.   I don't want to power on a
computer to do scanning
the HP Officejet Pro 8740 has a USB port  on the printer

The Officejet Pro 6978 is a unit that would let you do it (currently about $120 US). There are lower end units that have SD slots and second USB ports, but it appears that those are for reading only.
