VMotion Direct Attached Storage
Hi Experts,
We recently purchased a MD3400 DAS along with VMware licensing /VCenter. We currently have 2 Dell R720 servers in production.
We purchased the DAS for document imaging and so we can implement VMotion and HA. We have installed the HBA cards in the servers and carved out a LUN on the DAS which both servers can see under storage adapter and path.
The 2 Esxi hosts have local datastores that have 2 VM's on each. What are the steps needed in order to use the DAS for VMotion, so we can patch each Esxi host without downtime? Do we need to move all hosts to the new DAS datastore permanently and not use the local datastores?

You can buy vsan or install linux with gluster on local datastores to use those disks after following advice from andy.

Is it possible to only move the VM's to shared storage when we are going to do maintenance on the wither Esxi? Then move them back when completed?
We purchased the MD3400 to cut down on the expensive and the complexity of managing a fibre network for our current needs.

Also, In VCenter i created the Cluster, added the 2 hosts, do i need to add the Shared Storage LUN as a new datastore into each host so each host ?
