Installing generic hard drives into HP or DELL servers

Hi,

Whenever I talk to DELL or HP Server support technicians regarding the use of hard drives, they insist that I buy their branded hard drives (citing that their hard drives come with necessary firmware).
I have not done this, but I am curious when happens if I just add generic WD (or Seagate) enterprise hard drives or Sandisk (or Kingston) enterprise SSD into either  HP or DELL HD trays.
The DELL or HP branded HD prices are two times higher than these generic branded HDs/SSDs.
Before I buy & install generic HDs on DELL or HP servers, I just want to ask experts what their experiences were.

Thanks.

Thanks for sharing your experience and points and I appreciate.

"I have done this a number of times on Dell servers without serious problems" --> I am looking at an refurbished DELL server as my test server. Most of these refurbished Rack servers come with DELL hard drives, but in case they go bad, I wanted to know if I can buy Seagate or WD HDs (or SSDs) when I need to replace existing HDs.
I will NOT need to call tech support on this test server as long as Seagate or WD HDs (or SSDs) are recognized in RAID controller.

When replacing DELL drives, at least I will look for DELL drives in AMAZON.com or other web stores. Yes I agree that I can buy these "compatible" drives at a significantly lower prices.  Again I am looking to get a refurbished DELL server for "testing purposes".
Since future direction is SSD and DELL manufactured SSDs are so expensive, I will have to go with Sandisk or Kingston SSDs.
