Upgrading from Sonicwall Tz210

sio2y used Ask the Experts™

We have a sonic wall TZ210 with some pretty significant configurations. We've exported the config file in case of emergency and would ike to know if it's possible to get a newer sonic wall model and use the current config file.

In theory it's possible within reason.  In practice it can be that it isn't.  What SonicWALL were you thinking of moving to?

was hoping for a recommendation to one that might be more accepting of the older config file. REally it's just for back up. I guess we could always find another tz210 and get it set up just in case.

If you're looking to purchase I would always suggest going for the modern equivalent of what you have ( subject to there being no capacity issues ) and swap the new device in.
The TZ 300 might be a good replacement for you.  It will be a case of "suck it and see" when it comes to transporting the configuration over though!

Yes, as long as your TZ210 is on latest 5.9, you can import the config into a Generation 6, like the TZ300 as David Neeham suggested.

I like David's advice as well.

The short answer is you can import the configuration. However, according to Sonicwall, some of the configurations will transfer over, especially extra interface related items, if you move up to a TZ300. However, if you move up to a TZ400, which might be overkill for you, it should be a smoother experience. If you want extra clarification I'd recommend contacting Sonicwall support. I figure it's more fair for you to have the information than not to. But as with any migration, make sure that you check everything.
