Error Receiving email
Hi, We're having trouble on one laptop from one server. It's prodigy.net.mx. We're with Telmex in Mexico, and we're in Mexico physically.

The problem laptop is running Windows 7, using Thunderbird 45.8.0.

Settings are:

Error message is:

User generated image
If I change that user name to the email address, I get:

What other information do you need? Thanks in advance.

Your settings look ok but the error message is about the username and password.  It should be the user's actual email address and the password for that.  The email address does not necessarily end in '@prodigy.net.mx'.  A lot of services accept domain names that don't match the mail server name.

If you are sure that you are using the right login/pass you can try different authentication method in account settings.

Ok, thanks. What would make it stop working? It was working fine, then suddenly we got this error. My email is set up the same way, and I don't get the error. My user name is myname@prodigy.net.mx.

Thanks, all I'll work on what you've suggested. I haven't talked to Telmex yet, mostly because I'm lazy and it takes a lot of time to get to the English speaking folks there.

May be there is some "work in progress" on their side? I mean that they may have different settings for different accounts.

And so we return to my first answer: did you try to set up options differing from yours?

Hi- Ok, I called Telmex. They said they had been having server trouble, but it is mostly resolved. They said that if I can log onto their webmail, then the problem is with Thunderbird. We were able to log into webmail with a different password.

So we changed the password in Thunderbird, and now we don't get the error message, but we also don't get email in the inbox in Thunderbird. It says it is connected, but it never downloads the email.

it is mostly resolved
— I think that the word "mostly" is the keyword here.

And I can suppose several scenarios when one is unable to get mail with mail client whilst webmail is working fine.

What would you suggest I ask them, Dmitri?  I always hate the tendency for tech folks to tell you the fault doesn't lie with them or their equipment. I was a tech folk myself, and tried not to do that.

Thanks, all. We ended up just migrating to another email account, simply because getting to Telmex support is an ordeal, but the next step would have been calling them again and asking them specifically how to set up Thunderbird, as suggested.

Within Internet message handling services (MHS), a message transfer agent or mail transfer agent (MTA) or mail relay is software that transfers electronic mail messages from one computer to another using a client–server application architecture. A MTA implements both the client (sending) and server (receiving) portions of the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). The terms mail server, mail exchanger, and MX host may also refer to a computer performing the MTA function. The Domain Name System (DNS) associates a mail server to a domain with mail exchanger (MX) resource records containing the domain name of a host providing MTA services.
