Locking down calls on a Snom 300 SIP phone
Hi. We have a client using Snom 300 SIP phones (firmware version snom300-SIP 8.4.32) and he is trying to lock down his phones so that users can only call numbers in the phones speed dial list or an emergency number (UK 999). His speed-dial list is a mix of local, national and mobile numbers.
We can't control this through the telephone system as it is on a hosted service that doesn't have this functionality.
Scratching my head over the dial plan really so, if someone is able to help offer a solution, this would be awesome.

Is the set of numbers exactly the same for everyone, or does it vary by user?

Hi Masnrock, Thanks for coming back to me. The speed dial list differs from phone to phone, however each phone has only one user. The speed dial list, therefore, is the same for each user.

Yeah, I was thinking dial plans for each phone. The trouble is I had a look at the Snom Wiki and, I'll be honest here, never having really dealt with Snom phones I'm a little lost as to what the dial plan string for this would need to be. I didn't find the page to be too helpful tbh, despite that being the preferred Snom tech support manual! Lol.
As long as we're being honest, their customer service isn't the most helpful either. You end up depending on their forum, where you MIGHT have a Snom rep answer you. However, you could end up with another user as well. But some of them are pretty sharp. However, from my experience you'll get a generic answer that generally is limited in how helpful it is.

I know. I've called their tech support multiple times and, on each occasion, they have been too busy to answer my call but "someone will call back". The last time I called was on Wednesday last week and I'm still waiting, hence my question on here. I also note that their support forum is closed to new registrations and the Captcha service has been turned off for regular users, meaning that people can't login. Which is a nuisance!
I wonder if they are changing their forum's location and/or platform again. Same thing went on when I tried to sign up a few years ago. I did get in soon enough, but it was quite annoying. Do you have any idea which PBX your client has?
ASKER
Could be.
PBX is a hosted solution based around the 3CX system.

I guess the question comes down to who can administer the 3CX system in terms of creating extensions, rules, etc. Because 3CX has outbound dialing rules that can be applied to all extensions, or even just certain ones (it's been a while since I've worked on it intensively, but I am a Certified Engineer).

Indeed. The hosting company have said a flat "no". It's not something they offer. I've used 3CX extensively as we have several clients using it and know it can be done from the platform, but it's not something I have control over sadly...
Go figure. But that is where giving up control to a cloud provider can come back and be a pain.... but also, while I understand this is what your client wants, I would recommend against what is being requested (now a more general scenario like restricting international calls or even toll calls I could understand). I assure you that the question of being able to change the numbers that can be dialed is going to come up very quickly, and not be worth the administrative headache.

Should be ok - remotely configurable, so handed the changing of the numbers back to the client with instructions. ;-)
Excellent. So everything is working out for you now?
