"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Uninstall ALL HP software in Control Panel. Reboot!
In the Printer settings (within the printer obviously, not the PC) , go to the Service menu > Smart Install > and turn it OFF!
NOW, with the PC and printer on, connect the printer to it via USB. Allow it to detect and install drivers automatically this way (including the Windows Update checks). Once done you'll be able to use it as normal. There's no need to do anything further.
