this is WIn10 workstation
when you go to Programs and Features in Control Panel,

for SQL 2008R2, you see very few entries
for SQL 2012, it seems like little more
for 2016, there seems to a whole host of them:

examples:
2016 t-SQL Language Service
CLR Types for 2014
CLR Types for 2012
2016 t-SQL ScriptDom
2014 Express Local DB
2012 CommandLine
2016 LocalDB
etc.

is this a bloated 2016 install? could it be contained to not extend itself to 2012/2014? what will be purposes for 2014 express, when this is SQL 2016 standard?

under start,
i see these many options for SQL 2016 (are these mandatory aspects of 2016?):

Execute Package
ProjectConversion
Deployment Wizard
SSISDB Upgrade
Datafeed publishing
Data Profile View
Error & Usage
data Quality Client

or is this beyond control and all part of one install that you can't customize?
