Introduce 2012r2 or 2016 Dc to a 2008r2 domain?

Hello,
I currently have a 2008r2 dfl /ffl with 80 win7 clients. I have just purchased server 2016 licenses and associated dev cals. I am beginning to migrate all systems to server 2012r2 or 2016 platforms. I have to keep several applications on the 2012r2 level for product support, but would like to deploy 2016 domain controllers along side the existing 2008 DCs. After all seems well, I would like to remove the 2008r2 DCs from the network. Is this a safe approach or should I deploy 2012r2 DCs over several 2016 DCs for now?  I plan to run 2 DCs at my main site and one DC at a second site. Thank you for your assistance.

Lee W, Thank you for your comment. I support an environment with multiple sites and rotating users per device at each site so I went with Dev CALs. My only other follow up question would be: Have there been any issues with 2008r2 Group Policies migrating to a 2016 ADDS environment? Or more specifically, have there been any issues with w7 clients picking up GP from 2016 ADDS. Thanks again.

One thing to note is that you may want to upgrade your sysvol replication, if not already done, from FRS to DFSR prior to adding the 2016 DC. I received a warning while adding the DC role to 2016 server and was able to continue as FRS is still supported but depreciated. You can certainly do this after adding the 2016 DC (as I did without any issues) but it may be less headache from a troubleshooting perspective if you make the move prior to introducing the new servers in case any issues are encountered.
