Access blocked to XML files other than sitemap.xml?

I have a wordPress installation with a number of XML files in a directory.

Starting today, I can't seem to directly access (except via FTP or SSH) those .xml files.  The only one that seems to come up is sitemap.xml.  But all others - if I try to call them directly - return 404 errors.

The htaccess for my WordPress installation is the normal:

# BEGIN WordPress
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
# END WordPress

Any ideas how I would fix that?  Like I said, it was working up until this morning.

Are the files in a specific directory? Can you access other files in that directory?

probably the permissions of the files/folders - have you installed a plugin like Wordfence? (added security) it can change the permissions ot the folders,   the folders/files may have there permissions set to only allow scripts to access them (server side)  so trying look at them using the client and  http will be stopped.

Yes, I can access other files in the directory.  For example, I threw a TXT file in there, and I can access that.
This is the best money I have ever spent. I cannot not tell you how many times these folks have saved my bacon. I learn so much from the contributors.
