Migrating file shares from a Windows 2003 server to a Windows 2012 R2 server

Hi,
I have created my 2012 r2 server and added the file services role. I was researching ways of copying the file shares including permissions using XCOPY when I found this article
https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/canitpro/2014/10/29/step-by-step-migrating-a-windows-server-2003-file-server-ntfs-and-share-rights-to-windows-server-2012-r2/

I don't fully understand all the instructions in the MS Technet article. They seem more complex than using XCOPY.
My question is, which is better to copy file shares and their share/NTFS permissions? XCOPY or the instructions in the MS Technet article?

Hi, You can install DFS on both servers and link them.

Enable copy of shares between server and it will hold all the permissions intact.

if you are going to do this via DFS, Install DFS in 2012 R2 first and make that your primary root config server. Then install in DFS in Server 2003.

Perform all the replication config from Server 2012 R2.

Step to step instruction are found in article https://mizitechinfo.wordpress.com/2013/08/21/step-by-step-deploy-dfs-in-windows-server-2012-r2/
