Exchange 2013 CU3 to CU15 Upgrade

Hi, we have to upgrade 2 Exchange 2013 CU3 Server to CU15 ( DAG activated ) they both run as virtual machines on different hyper-v servers.
what do we have to prepare to do this ?
how is the procedure ( Step by step )
and what should we do in advance if we run in a disaster ?

i learned that an CU installation will completely remove the exchange installation, what does that mean to the existing exchange settings ?
what does that mean to the mailboxes etc ?

What about maintenance modes etc, cause its running in a DAG ? Is this realy so easy ?
Tom Cieslik

Make sure you have full backup.

In your case if Exchange run as virtual, just shot down VM and copy over VHDX file for backup.
This will give you some option to fast go back if something will not go right.

Since you are running on CU3, first you have to run setup /prepareschema then follow by setup /preparedomain. I will suggest to wait for 2 days after you do setup /prepareschema. Then you do setup /preparedomain

First you have to put the server in maintanance mode then do CU installation. CU update is similar like to re-install exchange but all information will retrieve from active directory

So when it is like a re-install, what about the databases ? what parts will be left on the server and what will be re-installed ?! will there be something deleted ?!
suriyaehnop

CU update it will run /setup m:upgrade. The databases, it will remain there, untouch.
suriyaehnop

Nothing will be deleted, unless you have a customize OWA webpage, which all customize settings will be store in webconfig files. When cu run, it will overwrite this customize webconfig to default

so to sum this up:

first steps are preparing the schema after that the domain.
move all databases to the 2nd server which will be upgraded after the 1st one.
put the server in maintenance mode, start the upgrade.
stop maintenance mode on upgraded server. restart server ?
