Hyper V

Dear Sir / Madam,

We have a client, using 1 Windows Server 2012 R2. They have staff and Student.

Staff are on VLAN 5 and Students are VLAN6. Currently we are using psychical Server (dell poweredge r430)

I like to know how we use Hyper V for Staff and Student for separate Server? Can you please advise ?

Hi

In hyperV nic settings on a vm you can specify vlan membership.
If a server is member of vlan 5 only users for vlan 5 can use it.

Is this effective solution instead of buy another physical server for Student ?

do we need to get license to use Hyper V and use 2 virtual machine ?

Thanks Patrick. I like to use Windows 2016 Server for Student VM. I hope shouldn't be a problem.

If you want server2016 to run as vm for student it is no problem BUT you need seperate license.

I cant say anything about price, normally it starts around $1000 but since you talk about students it might be possible you get a big discount with Microsoft licenses, check with your local dealer.

Reduncancy with one server is not possible, if you have two similair servers you can think off replication or even clustering with central storage. The latter is best but very expensive.
