Determine if a date is a Saturday or Sunday

If I have a bunch of dates stored in a database in this format:

2017-03-27

is it possible to query whether that day was a Saturday or Sunday?

So, in English terms I would want to do something like, IF 2017-03-27 was a Saturday OR Sunday then do something, else do something else if it wasn't.
