sharepoint 2013 can't delete BDC service application
experts,
I recently tried to patch my farm with the 2017 CU and noticed it failed at the end when trying to update my BDC database. We don't use the BDC service application and it looks like the database for that service app has been inadvertently deleted. I've tried to delete the service application using Central Admin and Powershell, but it times out. Is there a way I can manually remove this so I can successfully patch my farm?
Many thanks,
Tom

Thanks Walter Curtis,
what do you mean by provision the service? I can't actually do anything with it. I've tried deleting it, changing the database name associated with it (hoping that it would create a new database), and also deleting it but unfortunately nothing's worked. It's now stuck in the stopping state, and anything I attempt to perform on the service app just times out after a while.

I must have overlooked the part about it being stuck and you being unable to remove it. As you mention, powershell should remove it. This may require and IIS restart, or at least an app pool recycle, however you shouldn't do that on a production system during business hours.
Good luck...

yea, powershell didn't remove it. it timed out. So I'm a bit stuck now. any other suggestions?
I'm sure this is what you followed, but just in case you didn't find this, here is a good article about removing service applications:

shamefully, one of my servers in the farm was waiting for a reboot. once I rebooted, by BDC service app came online and I was able to delete it.
Thanks for your persistence.
