Cable Wireless Modem or purchase my own wireless modem

I have to swap out the cable modem provided to my by my internet service provider and need to decide if I want the replacement to include my wireless access (at a monthly cost) or purchase my own wireless modem.   If I purchase a separate wireless modem (something similar to a NetGear Nighthawk 1900) would that wireless connection by any better than the modem I would get from the cable company?  I do have a two story house and the connection on the bottom floor is sometimes not so good.  Thanks,

I am adding phone connectivity and they have to provide me with a modem that supports the phone.  Good suggestion about checking the supported modems.
There are not that many modems that support phone connections.  I have one here from Comcast.  It has 4 ethernet ports so I added a better Wireless router connected to it.
