Windows Server 2012 checking for updates forever
Hi Guys,
i have a Windows server 2012 is having updating issue. when i click on "Check for updates" it will check for update forever...
there is a patch management tool installed on another server, and all the PCs and servers in the domain are getting updates from the Update server (not WSUS)...
so far i have tried:
click on "Check online for updates from Microsoft Update", still checking forever...
deleting registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Softwar e\Policies \Microsoft \Windows\W indowsUpda te\AU then reboot, no difference.
deleting %systemroot%\System32\Catr oot2 and %systemroot%\SoftwareDistr ibution folder contents, then reboot. no difference.
ran sfc /scannow all corruptions fixed today, i will reboot and try again tonight...
any suggestion to this problem?

IS this a fresh install or have it been up and running for a while and patched before as well. If it is a fresh install I have seen the first check for updates take a very long time.

no it's not a fresh install, i have updated this server 4 months ago and it was fine.

i got a concern here, will command "netsh winsock reset" affect current network settings in this server? this is an AD, DNS and DHCP server in the domain, is it safe to run it?
this command is from step 7 in the link you provided.
Thanks.

as a precaution skip step 7 with the winsock reset for now ...

forgot to mention, in step 11- Install the latest Windows Update Agent.
i downloaded the standalone update but it couldnt install, it would just stuck in "searching for updates on this computer " forever, tried stopping update service but no luck.

Stop Windows Update services, rename or delete the Software Distribution folder then run the following tool on server:

tried running that diagnose several times, it didn't solved the issue. tried using WSUS offline which solved similar issue on Win8.1 PC but it didnt work here.
Seems like i have to manually download and install standalone updates now.
