Server Recommendations

I am looking to survey the crowd for opinion on a server.  I would sincerely appreciate your weighing in.

For a small business of the following size / needs would this server be appropriate?

10 to 15 workstations on domain

Server (2012 R2) will be used Active directory, folder ridirection & shares.

There is a file maker file that is shared out to the workstations

The server runs a program from intacinternational.
http://www.intacinternational.com/wintac-2016-minimum-system-requirements

The server will host Quickbooks

These are the specs:

Dell PowerEdge T320 Xeon Server 2012 R2 Standard Redundant Power 32GB 12TB (6 x 2 SATA) H310

Would this be underkill / overkill?

Thank you so much,
Tim

You guys are the best.  I sincerely value your opinions!
Awesome tip on the refurb site.  I appreciate it!   I take it you have used it before with success?
I fully trust your answers but have to prove this to the business so the more the merrier weighing in wise & of course feel free to take the opposite stance.   Thanks so much kids!  Tim
O & the 12TB of storage... It is 6 x 2TB.  It will likely end up being a mirror for the OS & RAID5 for the rest.   :)
Do not use RAID 5 on Server 2012 - use RAID 10 - More robust.
good tip, 10 gives greater fault tolerance... if you have the drive space....  :)
Thank you so much!
We set up our servers with just RAID 10 and have a bit less space than you for 10 users.  Actually 2 servers for 20 users about 4 plus TB of space.
Essentially some IT company supposed told the owner he needed a server they quoted at 18k to run these apps for a company of this size & it would be impossible to run these without 2 CPU's...
LVL94 - sounds like a sweet setup with PLENTY of room for growth.... :)
If the app is SQL you would need a second server.
The DB started out as an access DB but now a sql release came out.   What are you thoughts on SQL?  There are ALWAYS less then 10 people in the DB & that is a stretch...  I have run SQL on older servers with far less specs..  An example would be SQL based accounting program that routinely has 20 plus users on a single Xeon with 8GB.

This is a link to the specs from the manufacturer.

much appreciated.
Microsoft recommends a separate server for SQL and we have done that for a client.
As an aside.. I really appreciate all the input.
In your personal experience do you find issues otherwise?
We put SQL on the main server at one client, needed Microsoft to work out the issues and then had to get a second server. Lesson learned.
Also, what about a VM on the same machine to separate it so to speak?
What types of problems did you experience?
You can get a properly sized ESX server and do it with Virtual machines.
when you say "main server" you mean a DC?
ok, so let's say you took this machine & simply used HyperV (on a budget)?
Interoperatbility issues
You keep changing so let's close this and then ask your VM questions
Gotcha. I will shoot over there but hoping to keep question open & let others weigh in for the reasons explained near the top.  Again, appreciate your help.
We have answered your questions at the beginning here.
basically I was hoping more would weigh in mainly because the person I am dealing with is going to say... Yeah, 2 guys weighed in ... so what!
Thank you!
You are very welcome and best of luck with your server
Server Standard with ONLY the hyperV role.  Two VM's.  On the first add the Essentials role.  On the second, add your SQL server, although for a small network I don't think its necessary.... I might use the second server for RDP instead.

For SQL user count is not as important as transactions.  Further, for a small database (under 10 GB) the express version works the same and is free.

RAM is a function of what is running, and you can always add more if necessary.  I have never seen a well managed server max out of CPU cycles.  Most of the time, if you have 16 cores most are IDLE.  However, Server 2016 can not be licensed for fewer, so if the budget can stand the second processor go for it.

Essentials gives you a management console, RWA, Exchange or O365 integration, and best, PC backup.  Also Azure cloud backup at a very reasonable price.
