Exchange 2013 - Dedicated server for backup restores

We installed a separate Exchange mailbox role server just for restoring backups. It’s not in a DAG. Will this server will still be used for smtp traffic due to the transport service? Will this be a problem? Can we just disable that service as it’s used for restores only?

What about clients, I believe Outlook clients look for the closest server?

Sorry my #3 answer was wrong. I meant to type "no".  As Adam said, that service is needed for other things.  Why would you want to disable it anyways?

Closest in what way?  Number of hops, distance, etc...
