Thanks for the cynicism Lee!  I have 8 years I.T. experience with no formal training.

400 to Scott for having a more positive attitude
I can answer you ----- because I've done those exams ------ if you're serious

Comptia Network+ -------- 2 weeks

CCNA ---------------- this is cisco basics -----2 months----- but you need to setup a lab at home to practive everyday

CCNP----------------cisco advance -----------3-6 months --------------everyday lab practice to commit to memory you must practice can not just read the book.

CCIE --------------cisco telcom super advance -----------18-24 months every single day 8 hrs or more ----- you master this one and join the elite easily hire-able.
I don't think I was cynical at all.  I've walked into exams without so much as a minute's studying and passed the exam like it was the easiest thing in the world.  And I've walked into exams I've known like the back of my hand and spent several FULL, 8 HOUR DAYS learning, the technologies and felt like I failed them.  Indeed, I HAVE failed one in particular that I REALLY KNEW.

So how? How?, HOW!? can anyone realistically tell YOU how long YOU should study when we don't know your background and you didn't even fill in the profile on EE so we MIGHT have had a clue?!
Having an off day, does not prove you did not know what you're suppose to do, everybody have an off day for example have you ever driven somewhere but have no recollection how you got there --- did it negate the fact that you do not know how to drive or navigate the city, the problem is where was your mind when all this is happening?

Perfect practice makes perfect.
Natty Greg - between the last two comments, I think you're missing my point.  To put it more simply, your existing knowledge, skill level, aptitude for the subject matter, study methods, and most importantly, the way you learn, will dictate how long any person should study for any given exam.  These are all variables that are UNIQUE to the individual and NO ONE outside of the individual is qualified to estimate how long it should take to absorb the knowledge.
