Hi Team,

I am running exchange server 2013  on windows server 2012 R2,i have lots of windows update pending to be installed and even the CU is quite old,i wanted to upgrade both windows and CU update.

is the any preference or good practice to apply windows update prior to CU update or vice versa? and also i wanted to know do i need to take the mailbox server on maintenance mode for updating windows patches.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

We do cumulative updates first and windows updates later.

Windows updates should be run every month, this is important because it also pushes .NET updates which can be required for the CU.

CU mostly take a little more time to finish and for the latter it is very important you have a full backup stand-by.
Also it is smart to read the requirements for the CU. Some need forest and or AD preparations.
