OneNote not working with offline files

I have a few OneNote books that I sync with multiple users including one with surface pro tablet. All the users except the one with the surface tablet are syncing the data correctly. I get a message on the surface pro that OneNote might not sync correctly while offline files are enabled, is there a way we can continue to have offline files enabled and continue syncing OneNote correctly?

Thank you in advance!

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hello Sanchez,

Apologies for our delayed response.

Please note that Windows Offline Files provides cached access to network file shares when you're offline. Also, OneNote has its own cache that enables it to work offline and to do things like multi-user edit, sync, and merge automatically. Microsoft does not recommend that you use these caching methods together. This has been true since OneNote 2007. However, the message in the information bar is new in OneNote 2013. It warns users that doing this may cause problems with syncing.

Also, When OneNote 2013 detects that the notebook is in an offline folder location, you see the information bar message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section. You can disable the information bar message by using a registry key.  However again, Microsoft does not recommend that you do this, because you can encounter problems when you use both an offline folder and OneNote’s own cache (such as Windows Offline Files).

This can lead to some issues:-

1. Duplicate copies of sections may be created if those sections are edited from more than one computer.
2. Edits that are performed on one computer do not appear or are lost.

Still if you want to do this, here it is:-

Please be careful making changes to the registry, To disable the information bar warning message, set the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\OneNote\Options\DWord: DisableCSCInfobar = 1

Just for your information purposes here is a KB article on OneNote syncing best practices:-

Hope it helps!
