the workstation is windows xp.

** not from the printer redirect via rdp.

** not via hp universal print driver pcl 6 on the server and the client and redirected with local port ( \\computername\printer_share )

I would, in fact, expect problems with an XP workstation trying to access resources on a Server 2012 system.

I love XP and I don't often recommend this, but perhaps an upgrade to Windows 7 is in order.  W7 32-bit should run your XP applications without intervention or with a small amount of compatibilty mode tweaking.

If you must stay with XP, then I'd put the printer on a cheap network printer server and let all machines print to the printer server instead of trying to route jobs through the Server 2012 system.  Printer servers run under $25 on fleabay, and this approach has the additional benefit of it's one less thing to deal with on the server system.
