DNS problems and now some PC can't connect to \\servername

Hello Everyone,
We had some DNS issues in our company today. The problems are mostly resolved.
Some PC's CAN connect to \\servername but other PC's CANNOT. Those PC's that cannot are able to connect to \\ipaddress of the server.
So classic DNS problem, right?

The PC's that cannot connect to \\servername see an empty window when \\servername opens
But \\ipadress of the server opens all the shares fine.

I have flushed the dns cache (ipconfig /flushdns) but no success. Does anyone have any advise for me?

did you release and renew the IP addresses? I assume you are DHCP.

Oldest tip in the book, firstly reboot the machines that have the problem.

Thanks. I've done both of those. Several times.

Are all the PC's having the same issue?

Did you do an IPconfig /all and make sure all the DNS entries are correct?

What happens when you try to ping the host name (server name) from those machines in question?  Do you get host not found?

If you get a ping reply then it's not a DNS issue.  If you don't get a ping reply then you should get a host not found error and it's DNS related.

I can ping the host name fine but I cannot browse the \\hostname or \\servername.
I remember reading something about adding a server name and its ip address to the lmhosts file on a PC.
I will give that a try.
Edward Pamias

I would add the ip and hostname to the hosts file. Under c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
Patrick Bogers

If pinging the servername just fine it is cached credentials (most probably) did you check?
This is the best money I have ever spent. I cannot not tell you how many times these folks have saved my bacon. I learn so much from the contributors.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I don't think the problem is PC-specific. Some users can browse \\servername when they login to the same the PC that other users can't access \\servername on. That would imply permissions. The users who cannot open \\servername just see a blank window and see all the shares fine when they use \\ipaddress of the server
