Removing accepted domain from Exchange 2010
We had a department that had their own domain name that our E2K10 server accepted mail for. We recently sold the department and the buyers kept the domain name and moved email to their servers.
I removed the domain from the accepted domains list and from the address list. However, when sending email to the domain in question, my servers are still trying to send it internally.
I'm not sure what else i should change.

May be you have send connector with your domain?
Try restart transport service.

It turned out that I needed to do two things. I had to remove the domain from the vendor I am using to scan incoming and outgoing email. I also had to remove the users themselves.
Glad you got it fixed, I am left with one question.
What do you mean by 'the vendor I am using to scan incoming and outgoing email.'

found out it was our email scanning vendor.
If Get-AcceptedDomain does not return the old domain...then
It sounds like a outlook cache (n2k).
Create a new profile and see if it then works ok.
If still not working run. get-offlineaddressbook | update-offlineaddressbook On the exchange server
Wait an hour or so and download the new oab from outlook sent/recieve option.
