Decommissioning DNS server question

We are decommissioning a 2008 R2 DNS server. I want to setup DNS logging to make sure no machines are static assigned to resolve to this server before I remove it off the network? What are the step by step directions for this? Or do I just need to monitor the DNS event viewer to do this?
