reported error - unable to download or receive emails on my laptop

I can receive and send emails from my phone on my BT account but it will not do so on my laptop.
The following message comes up:
"Your POP3 server is providing inconsistent info.  The number of messages returned by the STAT command does not match number of items returned by the UDL or LIST commands.
Contact your POP3 or internet service provider."

I have contact BT and they said it is not them!
please could you advise.

Delete the email account (and delete the Outlook Profile if using Outlook). Use Control Panel, Mail to manage Outlook profiles.

I am using you are using POP3 and wish to. Your phone may be using IMAP.

Now restart the computer and set up the mail account. Make sure you have the following parameters correct:

incoming mail server for POP3
outgoing mail server for POP3
user name and password
correct outgoing server authentication.
correct ports:  995 / SSL IN and 587 / TLS OUT or the correct settings.

Change the above to IMAP if you wish to use IMAP.

You probably have a corrupted mail in your mailbox. Delete emails from mailbox (backup what you can) and retry
