Try a system restore from a previous date.

Does it sound like HW or SW?
It could be something corrupt. No way to know until the do a system restore. Reboot hit F8 go to safe mode and see if you can get in a do a system restore or just select the last know good configuration.

According to Microsoft it could be something corrupt and a system restore should fix it.
Sounds like a Hard Disk Problem.
Do you have the recovery media? Microsoft recommends doing recovery with the disks.
Corruption also can be the cause of Hard disk or Bad Boot Partition .

What is your laptop model ?
if you have any bootable Hardware diagnostic CD/DVD to check the Hard Disk and RAM it is the best time to use it.

was there any device removed, or replaced? internal or external ?
