I think, though, without a decent VPN router, the user will be stuck with PPTP VPN. I stay away from that.

To be fair, VPN is a bit dated if for home use. Most types of VPN have vulnerabilities which make me shiver.
Might be a lot more simple getting a free teamviewer account and using that :) No setup hassle for VPN. Just a simple install and go solution while it remains free.
