Migrate Domain User Profile to new Workstation on Same Domain

Hi Experts-

I'm looking for a way to move users to new computers.  They all have older upgraded Windows 10 machines on an SBS 2008/2011 domains. I'm replacing their workstations and want to move their accounts to the new workstations without changing the look and feel of their working environment.  Both their old Win10 PC and the new Win10 PC will be on the same domain/network.  What is the easiest way to move their profile to their new computer and retain all settings/data?

Thanks,

-Joe

Hey Larry-

Thanks for the quick response.  I've used Forensit in moving users from one domain to another, it does work great.  Since this is the same domain, just a different computer, I was hoping there is an easier way to move the user to their new PC and retain all settings.  The copy method always seems like a hack to me.  :)

Thanks,

Looks like ForensiT has a migration utility called Transwiz that may do what I need, so I'll give that a shot.

Thanks!

Have you looked into USMT? It works really well once you get a good configuration file setup

You can also set ROAMING PROFILE on your DC and let users synch their profiles with server.
Then replace computer and after log on on new machine profile should be synchronized back to new workstation.

Thanks Jason.

I've used USMT in the past but not for quite some time and was not aware that it was Win10 compatible.  Also, I'm only doing a few PCs at a time, so didn't want to spend much time with the configuration part (yes, I'm lazy that way :) ).

Thanks,

Thanks Tom, I hadn't thought about the old Roaming Profiles.

Thanks all, I have some things to try!

I understand the lazy part, but that is the best thing about it :)  Create your migration rules once then run the command against each user with the same rule.  If you have time its worth taking a look at the windows 10 overview. Good luck!

There is also a moving tool MS recommends from a third party called PC Mover express. It looks like it runs 30 bucks or so.
Pointing out that Roaming Profiles is just an automated copy.  Therefore it should seem like an "automated hack".  :-)

My first use of Transwiz got about 30% done then crashed.  I ran out of time then and will reattempt soon.

Forgot to comment on this question.  Transwiz did the job.  I would highly recommend first removing the Outlook OST file as it can be very large.  Also, remove all temp files as for some reason it wanted to copy those over too.  After that, it was still a bit time consuming, but did the job.

Thanks!

That is why you should use USMT:
Transwiz is dangerous as it just moves EVERYTHING including tonnes of junk from temp folders etc. and it is not a MS supported method.
Fx, as you mention the Ost file (exchange cache file) should never be transferred.

USMT is MS own approved method and if you need to use USMT as a st. aAlone tool use a GUI for it:
We have used USMTGUI for many years.
