Using a NAS in a mixed OS X and Windows enironment

My client has a NAS that they want me to connect to their LAN.  There are about 6 Macbooks/iMacs as well as 1 Win10 laptop and an iMac running Windows XP - yes, XP :-) in Parallels.

Is a NAS typically formatted so that both Macs and PCs are able to read/write the NAS? I ask because I know that Macs usually will read, say, a PC formatted drive, but not write to it.

Thanks.
